Maturity is Understanding Why Somebody Hurt You

Maturity is Understanding Why Somebody Hurt You

“Revenge is sweet.”

“Don’t get mad, get even.”

“An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.”

“Revenge is best served cold.”

All these cliches tell us one thing: revenge is good.

It’s not. It seems like it is especially for the young and immature.

But those who are old and wise enough to understand know that nothing good can come out of hurting your oppressors back. Sure, a fleeting feeling of triumph perhaps but that’s it.

Revenge does not benefit you in the long-term. In fact, it only hurts you more inside. It pulls you down. It draws you back. It fills up your heart with so much hatred that prevents you from experiencing true happiness.

If you have truly matured, you would know because you would not want to waste any precious second of your life getting back at your enemies. Instead, you will spend more time and effort in trying to understand them, putting yourself in their shoes so you could see why they have done such offensive things.

And when you have done that, it would be clearer to you. This would not justify their actions but at least, it would be easier for you to find it in your heart to forgive them.
